Wild Wonders: The Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies

Outdoor Adventure / Midlands / 3 Days

Embark on a mesmerizing journey into a floral wonderland as the Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies transform the Catawba River into a sea of delicate white blooms from mid-May to mid-June.

As a federally endangered species, these native wildflowers are a rare sight, thriving only in select rivers in the Southeast. Stretched along the Catawba River on the South Carolina fall line, Landsford Canal State Park is home to the world's largest population of Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies.

Stay updated on the bloom conditions with the park's "Lily Watch," a weekly online update providing insights into the current state of this captivating floral phenomenon.

History and Culinary Delights in Downtown Rock Hill

Once you’ve settled in to your accommodations, it’s time to explore Downtown Rock Hill.

Take a leisurely stroll along The Mural Mile, where vibrant artwork adds color and character to the city streets. Venture off Main Street and into the alleyway known as Freedom Walkway, a symbolic space honoring social justice activists. Here, you'll encounter panels depicting civil rights history, as well as striking mosaics and paintings that pay homage to the city's rich heritage.

For dinner, head to Kounter on Main Street and prepare to be dazzled by Chef Rob Masone's culinary creations. A Day of Adventure at Landsford Canal State Park

Fuel up for a busy day of exploring with a hearty breakfast. Try The Flipside Café’s hashbrown bowls or the banana walnut pancakes. Head to Eggs Up Grill for breakfast classics like omelets, eggs benedict or shrimp and grits.

To make the most of your time in the park, pick up something for lunch before you head out of town. Try Rock Hill Bagels & Deli for sandwiches, wraps and salads or Amelie’s French Bakery & Café for their signature chicken salad sandwich or classic French dip baguette.

Home to one of the largest populations of rocky shoals spider lilies in the world, Landsford Canal State Park offers a rare opportunity to witness nature's mesmerizing display.

For a closer look at this natural wonder, hike the Canal Trail to the overlook for panoramic views of the lilies. This scenic trail spans 1.5 miles and follows the historic path of Landsford Canal, constructed in the 19th century to navigate around the rocky rapids of the Catawba River. When in use, the canal served as a vital trade route connecting the foothills and coastal plain. Today, remnants of the original canal stonework and "locks" that regulated the water levels can still be observed toward the trail's southern end.

Feeling adventurous? Rent a kayak or canoe and paddle along the river, soaking in the serene beauty and abundant wildlife. The Catawba Riverkeeper suggests first dropping off your boat at the launch site. Afterward, drive to the take-out point and park there. You can then conveniently return to the launch area by walking along the Canal Trail in the park, a scenic 1.5-mile route.

End your day with dinner at The Pump House, where you’ll enjoy scenic views of the Catawba River. Built in the 1940s, the building was renovated and repurposed in 2015 as a one-of-a-kind destination restaurant. Each of the five floors has its own unique dining room offering incredible views, but none are as spectacular as the view from the rooftop bar. With a selection of handcrafted cocktails, award-winning wines and Southern-inspired dishes with a chophouse flair, this is one dining experience you won’t forget.

Travel Tip
Travel Tip:

Expect the park to be crowded during lily season. You can pay the park entrance fee in advance online, but it doesn’t guarantee you admission if the park is full, so we recommend that you arrive early.

The portion of the river you’d kayak or canoe is fun, but you should be aware of changing conditions. The rapids are usually class I, but can become class III with the right amount of water flow.

From Brunch to Brews: A Day in Rock Hill

After enjoying a leisurely start to the day, it’s time to try some of the best brunch options in town. Tempt your tastebuds with the brunch specials at Another Broken Egg Cafe, where you can indulge in bourbon street pancakes—topped with bananas, pecans, rum butter sauce and whipped cream— cream cheese-filled omelets and scramblers served with your choice of sides, and classics like biscuits and gravy all topped off with a salted caramel cold brew.

After brunch, stroll through the flower-lined walkways of Glencairn Garden, a hidden gem with mid-century-style fountains and lush surroundings. What started out as a backyard garden has transformed into an 11-acre public park filled with colorful azaleas, pansies and wisteria.

Whether you're seeking unique gifts or souvenirs to remember your trip, Rock Hill offers a diverse range of shopping experiences. Head to the Shoppes at River’s Edge near the Riverwalk community for a treasure trove of antiques, furnishings and unusual items. Have a book lover in your life? Then The Liberty Book Company is a must-stop. This little bookstore is filled floor-to-ceiling with new and used books, including popular new fiction titles, making it impossible to leave empty-handed.

Wrap up your shopping excursion with a visit to The Mercantile. This modern general store and coffee shop on White Street offers an immersive and unique shopping experience inside the historic Coca-Cola Factory.

End your day at Legal Remedy Brewing Co., a local brewery, and its next-door neighbor, The Journeyman, an authentic Irish pub housed in a converted car dealership. The menu offers delicious Irish-inspired dishes, from fish and chips to shepherd's pie, and features a wide selection of Legal Remedy’s beers.
