On a sunny summer day when the temperatures rise close to double digits, there is nothing better than spending time on Prestwood Lake, paddling its serene waters or casting a line for fish.

The 300-acre lake and nearby Lake H.B. Robinson were created in the late 1800s when Black Creek was impounded to accommodate the energy needs of the local industry. If you're visiting the lake, be sure to pack your binoculars to observe the beauty of the Pee Dee.

Start your full-day adventure at the lakefront Lawton Park. It has a put-in where you can launch a kayak to explore Prestwood Lake. If paddling is not your thing, the park offers plenty of other opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. You can play tennis, fish, eat lunch in a picnic shelter or let your kids enjoy the playground. The historic park pavilion, complete with a catering kitchen and ballroom with the original hardwood floors, is an awesome spot for special events and gatherings.

You can also cool off by visiting Neptune Island, a waterpark with a quarter-mile-long lazy river, zero-entry pool, wave pool, speed body slide, a pair of tubular water slides, three mat racing slides and the popular Piratesville Splash Pad. Cabana rentals, party huts and food trucks add to the fun, making the new waterpark a celebrated destination for residents and visitors from all over the state.

Hartsville is also home to Byerly Park Recreation Complex, one of the finest sports facilities in the Southeast. The 93-acre, multi-use recreation complex features five soccer fields, four softball and baseball fields, a 400-meter, eight-lane track and field facility, two football fields, six tennis courts and much more. Those wanting to enjoy the outdoors or kick off a healthy lifestyle have several options, including a 1.2-mile lighted walking trail, the Terrence J. Herrington Track or the fitness center in the Coach T.B. Thomas Sports Center.
